Italian Women & Other Tragedies
Italian Women & Other Tragedies
By Gianna Patriarca
A woman’s passionate journey into memory and the reality of her immigrant experience. Gianna Patriarca’s first collection of poems, Italian Women and Other Tragedies, transports the reader into her world through a language direct and unadorned yet rich with images that haunt as they travel straight to the heart. A chronicle of paesani, family, lovers, this book confronts dislocations of the spirit and the poet’s own struggles for self-awareness with candour, passion and, at times, anger. Deeply personal, with an edge that is often raw and urgent, these poems are infused finally with a deep sense of humanity and simpatia.

If it is true that history repeats itself, it is true that past forms of expression and resistance remain relevant and valuable. Italian Women and Other Tragedies, with its focus on sexism and post-war migration, re-emerges as a weapon in a world where misogyny and war are still pervasive. Then and now, the poetess’ pen continues to challenge the sword. “It is time you stopped / your war with my memory / making me the devil/ in your desire,” she powerfully exhorts. And in the sea of tragedy we also find community and joy: in a round moon, in Calabrian song, in a child’s smile at bedtime.
